This short, the second film to feature Truffaut’s alter ego Antoine Doinel, was originally made for the omnibus film Love at Twenty but has outlived its companions. As romantic and gently ironic as The 400 Blows is harsh and haunting, this modest lark finds Antoine Doinel, the street kid from The 400 Blows, now in his teens. He meets twenty-year-old Colette at a concert and falls in love. While she sees him only as a friend, he follows her like a lovesick puppy. The comic sweetness of this episode sets the tone for future Doinel films.
