Romanian filmmaker Catalin Mitulescu spent numerous years working in Austria, Hungary, Poland and Italy. In 2001, he graduated from the Film Directing Department at the University of Film and Theatre in Bucharest. His student films BucarestiWien: 8:15 and 17 minute intarziere were selected at the Cannes Film Festival-Cinefondation in 2001 and 2002 and were distributed theatrically in Romania. They received numerous awards both in Romania and on the international circuit. His short film Trafic was awarded the Palme dOr at the Cannes Film Festival in 2004. Continue reading

Lucian Pintilie – Tertium non datur (2006)

It is the end of the Romanian war against the Soviet Union (but not the end of the WWII), as Germany and Romania are allies, but in a few weeks they will be enemies. Two German officers stop for a lunch with a group of Romanian officers and as the story develops, a pair of rare postage stamps are acquired in very different occasions, which underlines the differences between the group of officers. This deceptively simply short film has many complex ramifications about history, honor, about how material value translates in life and survival. Director Pintilie works beautifully with his actors, especially Victor Rebengiuc (a preferred actor of Pintilie) and his use of visual space in a small room is both inspired and effective. Story
Set in early 19th century Wallachia, when a local policeman, Costandin, is hired by Iordache, a boyar (local noble), to find Carfin, a Gypsy slave who had run away from the boyar’s estate after having an affair with his wife, Sultana. Costandin sets out to find the fugitive, beginning a journey full of adventures. Gypsy slavery lasted from the 14th century up until the middle of the 19th century, a situation which is very little known and almost nonexistent in the public debate today, although its impact continues to influence Romania’s social life.
