  • Mai Zetterling – Älskande par AKA Loving Couples (1964)

    1961-1970ArthouseDramaMai ZetterlingSweden

    PLOT:
For her feature film directing debut, actress Mai Zetterling turned to Agnes von Krusenstjerna’s controversial masterpiece of Swedish feminist literature, “The Misses von Pahlen,” an intense and personal seven-part novel that has been likened to the great works of D.H. Lawrence. As three pregnant women from different backgrounds wait to have their babies in a hospital in Stockholm at the outbreak of the Great War, they relive their childhood and youthful experiences via individual flashbacks. Drawing on the classic Ingmar Bergman style of Swedish filmmaking and collaborating with many of his favorite actors as well as the great cinematographer Sven Nykvist, Zetterling had produced a powerful fusion of personal emotional drama and a commentary on the role of women in a society in moral decline.Read More »

    Quote:
One of Ingmar Bergman’s most satisfying marital comedies, A Lesson in Love stars the droll and sparkling duo of Eva Dahlbeck and Gunnar Björnstrand as a couple deep into their married years and seeking fresh pastures. Björnstrand’s gynecologist falls for one of his patients (Yvonne Lombard), while his wife flounces off to Copenhagen to renew her fling with a sculptor (Åke Grönberg). Deftly interspersing scenes of farce with interludes of tranquil reflection, A Lesson in Love serves as an aperitif before the full-blown comic brilliance of Smiles of a Summer Night the following year.Read More »

  • Josef Fares – Kopps AKA Cops (2003)

    2001-2010ActionComedyJosef FaresSweden

The film concerns the police force of a small fictional Swedish village, Högboträsk. The village is so peaceful that crime has become nonexistent. The police spend their shifts drinking coffee, eating hot dogs and chasing down runaway cows. This is all well and good for the village’s own police, but then comes the news: The police management board has decided that as there is no crime, there is no need for a Police Station i.e. the local police or… “The Kopps”. This would mean the loss of income for the policemen and this gets those police folks a bit fired up; – something needs to be done; something so drastic. So they begin to stage crimes in order to preserve their jobs. This includes burning down the local hotdog stand, hiring a drunk to steal a packet of sausages, thrashing a local car, faking a shootout and staging a kidnapping using their friends as actors. But somehow their plans don’t quite go the way they’ve planned. A gentle and funny comedy from the maker of Jalla Jalla starring 4 Kopps, a bit of love interest and a diminutive police dog.Read More »
