James Benning – 11 x 14 (1977)

Criterion: David Hudson
February 18, 2018 | Berlinale | Critic’s Rating: +++ (jury.critic.de)
None of that was on my mind as I luxuriated in the vibrant grain. Those, like me, who’ve been familiar only with Benning’s later work may be surprised by how entertaining and, at times, even funny 11 x 14 is. . . . Dialogue is rare, muffled, and all but indecipherable, but that doesn’t mean 11 x 14 isn’t a film to listen to as well as admire for its framing and composition.

Language(s):No Dialogues. Some English (radio, songs, etc…)

  1. I cannot thank you enough for posting this beautiful print—I’ve been holding off for more than a two decades to watch this film because of the poor quality versions I had available. It was so worth the wait to finally watch this film in high resolution. Thank you!

  2. Thanks! Any chance of a restored version of “One Way Boogie Woogie” as well?

    • I would love to see this as well—the only copy I have access to is so bad that I decided to stop it 10 minutes in, as it didn’t do justice to the work.
