Noriaki Tsuchimoto – Shiranuikai AKA Minimata Part 2: The Shiranui Sea (1975)

Quote:
The Shiranui Sea is the second of the Minamata documentaries released by Zakka Films and widely considered to be Tsuchimoto’s masterpiece. If Minimata: The Victims and Their World follows the victims in their struggle for compensation for suffering from Minimata Disease, Japan’s most notorious case of environmental pollution, The Shiranui Sea provides a beautifully lyrical and compelling portrait of their everyday lives and difficulties. It is both a profound expose of how government and industry can undermine the environmental foundations of daily life, and a model for how documentary can humanely reveal human suffering.

“One of the monuments of Japanese documentary”.

  1. My apologies, but part two is inactive.

  2. Hello, i take advantage of this incredibly moving documentary, which i just ordered from the publishing house as per your plea, to thank you again for your choices of publications on this blog. Every single week feels like a best of, except for it being brand new stuff. And i always wonder in the diversity yet integrity of your choices, never the same always coherent, the only thread i believe i grasp is that all the movies you post are about humanity in each of us, deep, shallow, superficial or fundamental, ugly or kind, at fault or at its glory, yet humanity, our one common feature. I may be totally off base but in any case thank you so very much for what you do. And a happy new year of movies love togetherness.
