In 1980, Krzysztof Kieślowski filmed The Talking Heads, in which he asks his interlocutors “Who are you?” and “What do you want?” Forty years later, Jan P. Matuszyński pays tribute to him by asking the same questions to actors and directors for whom Kieślowski was important.

This film is a project of the Adam Mickiewicz Institute proposed by Jan P. Matuszyński to pay tribute to Krzysztof Kieślowski. Thanks to Justyna Godycka (Adam Mickiewicz Institute).

A word from the director

Even today, Krzysztof Kieślowski’s films continue to disturb and inspire, and when they talk about him, the greatest artists of our time cite him alongside such luminaries of the cinema as Tarkovsky and Bergman. This is particularly true of Robert De Niro, who has repeatedly admitted that The Decalogue is one of the key works in his personal pantheon. It is astonishing that a man as modest and unassuming as Krzysztof Kieślowski has managed to establish himself as a major figure in the history of world cinema. He is in tune with the times by asking fundamental questions; questions he asks not from the point of view of a sage or a moralist, but from that of an ordinary man. He asks them because he does not know the answers himself, and neither do his interlocutors. Perhaps this is why his films are of constant interest and are constantly present in international festivals and critical reviews.

Krzysztof Kieślowski was a very sensitive man, which can be seen in his films and heard in his interviews. He was also an excellent observer, able to listen and look carefully, while remaining very simple at the same time. With his sleeves rolled up and his inseparable cigarette in his mouth, Kieślowski was someone who was very open to others. He began his film career as a documentary filmmaker, a path that seemed clear given his predisposition and curiosity about the world and its inhabitants. In his 1972 short film The Refrain, he delves into the almost paranoid bureaucracy of a funeral home. In Seven Women of Different Ages, released in 1978, he depicts ballet dancers of all ages and the relationships between them. In one of his most famous films, From the Point of View of a Nightwatchman, made in 1977, he portrays a man with fascistic convictions who, because of his position, abuses his power over others.

In this project, however, we are interested in another documentary, perhaps Kieślowski’s most famous and characteristic. In this 1980 film entitled Talking Heads, several protagonists follow one another while giving the impression of being one and the same person at different ages. The director asks these two seemingly simple questions to each of his interlocutors: “Who are you?” and “What do you want? These questions will recur later in Kieślowski’s filmography. The documentary was made at the beginning of a decade of social and political change that led to the fall of the Iron Curtain. Thanks to his incredible sense of observation, the director was certainly able to capture in his reportage the atmosphere of the time and the state of consciousness of Poles in the pre-Solidarność era. The result is a unique film, which is not only a record of a nation’s history, but also an account of the timeless emotions and moods of ordinary people, whether a one-year-old child or a hundred-year-old woman.

Today, more than forty years later, have these existential questions lost their value? How do we answer them in 2021, in the age of global communication and social networks? To find out, we used technological advances in social communication, and asked these same questions to Krzysztof Kieślowski’s former collaborators, as well as to film personalities from all over the world for whom the director and his work are still as important as ever.
