Frederick Wiseman – Welfare (1975)
: the state of doing well especially in respect to good fortune, happiness, well-being, or prosperity must look out for your own welfare
a : aid in the form of money or necessities for those in need
b : an agency or program through which such aid is distributed
A dramatical line that could start with “Bonnie and Clyde” and end with “Waiting for Godot”, going through Kafkaesque procedures, of course, but with all the good will in the world… which could be just as well as responsible for all these people going crazy in runarounds than the bureaucracy itself?
In all cases, at the end of Welfare, Wiseman cinema has never been so close to a kind of prayer, a well documented one, having started as a simple and confident revendication, ending into a desperate one.
