Benoît Jacquot – La fausse suivante aka False Servant (2000)

A young woman disguises herself as a knight to expose a gold-digging man divided between her and a Countess.

Jacquot began his career as assistant director of Marguerite Duras (Nathalie Granger, India Song) and as an actor in films directed by Jean-Claude Biette. Then turned to writing and directing with the 1975 film L’Assassin musicien (The Musician Killer) which starred Anna Karina.

He usually alternated between film and TV. In the latter he made a name by adapting stories by Henry James, Borges and Kafka. Several of his films are also adaptations of famous works of the literature, among which La Fausse suivante (The False Servant) displays Marivaux’s play of the same title. But more than an adaptation, I would call this an ‘exposition’ or rather an ‘expositive indagation’ of the theatrical stuff that lies at the film’s origin.

It’s funny that Marivaux’s plays gave rise to the rather deprecative term ‘marivaudage’, denoting an affected style, usually strained, over-elegant, too subtle and too nice by half (this is the guy of whom Voltaire said he had “spent his entire life weighing nothing in scales of spider’s webs”… as a matter of fact, I guess I remember the term was also applied to Rohmer’s movies). I would consider this film to be (among other things) a mockery regarding those who would use the word too easily as a derogatory weapon. Marivaudage au carré.
