The story follows Li Hung (Maggie Cheung) who obtains a student visa to the US after considerable difficulty. She travels to America to continue her education. Life is hard there, as she makes clear in her letters home to husband Nansan (Tony Leung). He insists that she stay in America for the sake of their infant child. As her situation worsens, Li Hung asks Nansan for a divorce. When he denies her request she severs communication with him. In desperation, Nansan illegally enters the US and arrives in New York to try to find his wife, only to encounter the same brutal realities that his wife had faced. A friendly teenaged Chinese-American hooker who can speak Cantonese helps Nansan as he frantically searches for Li Hung, navigating the many perils of the city.
