Cristián Sánchez – El zapato chino (1980)

A taxi driver meets Marlene, a girl from the provinces who´s lost in a brothel. He immediately decides to protect her and let´s her stay in his house. Slowly his fatherly instincts give way to a strange hidden passion. Finally he gives up living in the trunk of his taxi while Marlene states that she wants to live with him forever.
El zapato chino is the first long feature by Christian Sanchez. It was made during the Pinochet dictatorship and tries to capture the surreal and confusing atmosphere of that period. It was realized i in a clandestine way, but it is said that Pinochet himself wanted to see the film after it´s completion.

Un taxista encuentra a Marlene, una niña provinciana, perdida en un burdel. Inmediatamente decide protegerla y la instala en su casa. Poco a poco, su afecto paternal se transforma en una extraña pasión soterrada. Finalmente el chofer termina habitando en la maleta de su propio taxi, mientras Marlene declara que desea irse a vivir con él para siempre. El primer largometraje dirigido en solitario por Cristián Sánchez fue hecho en plena dictadura y busca captar aquel ambiente extraviado, confuso de tal época. Realizada bajo la vigilancia de las autoridades, Incluso se ha dicho que tras su finalización, el mismo Pinochet pidió verla.
