On completing his training at the famous VGIK film school, Otar Iosseliani shoots Aprili as his end-of-studies film. The film is perfectly constructed and already reveals the poetic – and political – strength of the Georgian master’s mise en scène.
Shot in 1962, and almost immediately banned by the Soviet authorities for excessive formalism, this film made its first screening with its full 46-minute running time at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival.
