The most effective aspect of this film’s visual strategy lies in its assigning of battle scenes to an anecdote and a vision: the anecdote is recounted by the returning farmer and the vision is experienced by a villager whose son is a soldier. The anecdote shows threatening swarms of Russian soldiers, but no direct brutality: the heinous deeds of the raging Cossacks are described but not shown. The vision serves to remind the audience that it is their duty to advance war loans.
