Philippe Garrel – Le Grand Chariot AKA The Plough (2023)

Three siblings, a father and a grandmother run a business in the form of a travelling puppet show. When the father dies, the remaining family members try to keep his legacy alive.

There was an adjustment period, 10 or so minutes, seeing this in color. Which is weird to type about any director after 1966 but if every memory of Garrel — even the color movies — comes to me in black-and-white it’s as much from their depths of ill feeling as the high-contrast images. So after a bit I rationalized, then accepted, finally embraced some understanding that putting your three children (two of whom share names between real life and characters) onscreen at such an advanced age would necessitate even Philippe Garrel (with more work to his name about dead loved ones than anybody should probably subject themselves to) softening at the edges. A rain-drenched nighttime scene (one among only a handful of narrative turning points) might be truly hellish, à la The Virgin’s Bed, if a slight trace of color on the puppeteering house didn’t present itself, or a later comic bit not quite so funny without a bowl of oranges at the exact center.
After so many movies where one of his kids attempts or outright commits suicide, its one outsider character being subject to personal breakdown suggests that, in some ways, he still can’t help himself.
Garrel’s best operates with a flawless metronome — the pace of shot-reverse sequences, the aslant compositions, the surprise spurts of voiceover, the sudden fades. Unsure just out of the theater if The Plough is one of them but it pretty much fully brought me to that space, and almost nothing in movies makes me happier.
