Sirk is praised for his self-reflexive melodramas while this film with few name stars shines so much brighter than those hybrid films. Here, Sirk plays it straight with great results. Jean-Pierre Melville in his interview with Rui Nogueira called this film “Sirk’s one true masterpiece” and I completely agree. The film’s title sets up a contrast between love and death and the film itself is concerned with two ways of living, either with compassion or with unfeeling brutality.
