Shinobu Hashimoto – Maboroshi no mizuumi aka Lake of Illusions (1982) (HD)

A 1982 sci-fi cult drama about a grudge of a woman whose dog was murdered.

I was lucky enough to see this wrongheaded 164 mins epic (a cult favourite in Japan) on a big-screen during an all-night movie show in Tokyo. Hashimoto was a celebrated screenwriter of both commercial and critical hits (including several for Akira Kurosawa), when he was given an awful lot of money to helm this seriously pretentious non-categorisable oddity.

Reiko Nanjo (who’s not very good) stars as a bath-house prostitute and avid jogger (around title lake) whose dog is killed one day. A clue leads her to search for a musician in the city. Meanwhile a foreign former co-worker at the bath-house (now a CIA agent!) tells her of a plot to blow-up a space shuttle. Another curious aside is a very long period flashback (which seems like expensive outtakes from a different, rather impressive movie) set in feudal times (which features many decapitated heads), all of which is related to Nanjo by a flute-playing astronaut. Nanjo eventually tracks down her nemesis (Kinya Kitaoji), and after an exhausting, long jogging scene (there is a lot of jogging in this film), stabs him to death (he erupts a geyser of blood)! (At this point, the usually quiet and polite Japanese audience I saw it with cheered!)

It ends with the astronaut (Daisuke Ryu) leaving his flute to float in space, with the supposed gravitas and meaning of the ending of 2001! This thing is nuts (and was a major embarrassment for Hashimoto). With Kazuo Kitamura, Seiji Miyaguchi, Hideo Murota, Keiko Takahashi and Hideji Ootaki. The score is by Yasushi Akutagawa, and it boasts three respected cinematographers.
