Jerome Hill – Death in the Forenoon (1966)

Quote:
An experimental short by Jerome Hill in which footage of a bullfight is painted on the film. Footage of the bullfight, shot by Hill in 1934, hand-painted by the artist three decades later.

Quote:
Jerome shares with me the sense that the subconscious is supreme in making a work of art, if one has the courage to follow the directions of the subconscious in spite of what friends or family or anyone else says. The subconscious creates the balance. We are talking here, not only about our inner personal feelings, but the insight that comes when we strip away personality and go down deep into ourself, beyond genders and subcultures, and find that we are touching all people in our culture; then more deeply, stripping away all personality, until we arrive at the universal — the unconscious that is shared by all of humanity. This is the step at which the province of art truly begins, when one touches all men and women of all time.

The mistake that so many people make is to aim for that consciously and directly — it’s a mistake that is especially common in Hollywood. They say, “We will just aim this film so that it touches all people of all time,” but all they ever really manage is to touch the current fashions and whatever the popular paranoia is at the moment; and ten or twenty years later the movie is embarrassing even on the late show on TV.
