Tokuzô Tanaka – Kujira gami AKA The Whale God (1962)

Quote:
Based on the award-winning story of the same title by Uno Koichiro. A demon whale is killing the fishermen of a small village year after year. The townspeople become obsessed with killing the whale, and the town’s wealthiest man offers his land, position and only daughter to the man who can kill the beast. A stranger, Kishu, steps forward and declares that he will kill the whale. A brute, he frightens the crowd. Another fisherman, Shaki, wants to kill the whale to avenge the deaths of his father and grandfather. Shaki is the popular leader of the local men.
Toyo, the daughter of the wealthy man, refuses to marry a common worker, and tells Shaki so. He replies that in any case he has a love of his own. Shaki’s girlfriend, Ei, begs him to marry her, but he refuses until the whale is dead. Ei is raped on the beach by Kishu.
During the summer Shaki’s mother dies. Her final advice is to visit an old hermit who lives in the hills. Throughout the fall and winter, Shaki prepares mentally for the battle with the whale. One day while praying at the family grave, he hears Ei groaning in the fields, and finds her giving birth. He takes responsibility for the child, pledging his love to Ei. Toyo is infuriated as this will make her more the fool if she is forced to marry Shaki. Shaki visits the hermit who states that the only way to kill the whale is to continue to ride it no matter how long it takes.
The whale returns and the village prepares. After performing a ritual dance the men board their boats and pursue the beast. Kishu jumps on the whale first (out of turn) and drowns. Shaki moves in for the kill and manages to do the deed without being killed himself. He is taken to Ei’s house to recover; however he is aware that he is dying. He asks to be taken to the beach to see the head of the whale. Ei confesses the name of the father of her child. Shaki says he knows and forgives Kishu. As he dies, Shaki imagines himself to be god of the whales heading toward the sunset.–Mariko Ikkai, Polly Matthews.imagines himself to be god of the whales heading toward the sunset.–Mariko Ikkai, Polly Matthews.
