  • Isao Takahata – Hôhokekyo tonari no Yamada-kun aka My Neighbors the Yamadas (1999)

    1991-2000AnimationComedyIsao TakahataJapan

    Plot / Synopsis
My Neighbors the Yamadas uses a distinctive animation style to tell a series of vignettes about the title family. These vignettes vary from leaving the young girl behind at the mall to the father confronting a motorcycle gang for disturbing the peace. The “real” story is often interrupted by metaphorical interludes, featuring the husband and wife navigating the ship of their family through the sea of life to the father becoming a superhero to chase down the aforementioned delinquents. The film is a feel-good family drama that expresses various themes about living with fathers and mothers, husbands and wives, daughters and sons, and brothers and sisters. • Tia Kouvo – Mummola AKA Family Time (2023)

    2021-2030ComedyDramaFinlandTia Kouvo

An annual family Christmas get-together that sees the usual tensions rise.

Mummola begins with a door that keeps on opening to let its characters into a house surrounded by nature that will be the setting of much of the film, and welcomes the audience into a small world that is portrayed with fierce tenderness and surprising rigour. Three generations come together for the holidays and re-enact a seasonal ritual of traditions, conversations and household chores. These elements would seem to indicate the return of the Nordic family drama, but Tia Kouvo’s debut is more of a “comédie humaine” that opts instead for an analysis of behaviour, relationships and private spaces that is both ironic and harrowing. In between meals around the table, anecdotes, TV programmes and, yes, saunas, there are no secrets or traumas to be revealed, but above all gestures to observe and silences to interpret.Read More »

    Quote:
Harshly treated by the critics on release, of Pedro Almodovar’s work, Kika is perhaps the one that most benefits from re-viewing and re-assessment.

The story of Kika (an astonishing Veronica Forque), a Madrid makeup artist whose relationship with Ramon (Alex Cassanovas) leads to criminal schemes involving Kika’s maid Juana (Rossy DePalma), Jauan’s amorous, criminal brother Pablo (Santiago Lajusticia) and Ramon’s youth-obsessed father Nicholas (Peter Coyote). Overseeing it all is the muckraking, reality tabloid television show presided over by the formidable Andrea Scarface (a uniquely attired Victoria Abril).Read More »

  • John Paizs – The International Style (1983)

    1981-1990CanadaComedyJohn PaizsShort Film

The final instalment of John Paizs’ “Three Worlds of Nick” trilogy is an amusing melange of ’60s spy thrillers and other classics. Super secret agent Nick attempts to liberate a top secret microchip from the clutches of multimillionaire Quinton Frost. Paizs pokes fun at the jet set, the Cold War and Jean-Paul Sartre.

The film stars Canadian television personality Peter Jordan as the protagonist, and John Paizs in his reoccurring silent Nick character. Guy Madden (credited as Gal Madden) also has an unbelievable cameo, as does George Toles.Read More »
