Eizô Sugawa – Kemonomichi AKA Beast Alley (1965)

Tamiko works as a live-in maid in a modest ryokan, while her bed-ridden husband, Kanji, slowly deteriorates due to a cerebral disorder. He makes her home life increasingly miserable, but Tamiko keeps up appearances. One day, Kotani, a well-to-do hotel manager visits the ryokan, is struck by Tamiko, and hints that he wants to help her to escape from her current life.
Often compared to Masumura Yasuzo’s Black Trilogy because of its penetrating, grim portrayal of corruption, Beast Alley marks the reuniting of The Beast Shall Die’s director/screenwriter duo, Sugawa Eizo and Shirasaka Yoshio. Sugawa and Shirasaka’s screenplay is based on the original story by procedural maestro Matsumoto Seicho (Castle of Sand); the chilling soundtrack is composed by the great Takemitsu Toru.
