In 1975 Aurelia Schober Plath published selected letters from her daughter Sylvia Plath under the title “Letters Home: Correspondence 1950-1963”. The correspondence was the basis for Rose Leiman Goldemberg’s Letters Home. Chantal Akerman adapted Françoise Merle’s play for her film, with the mother Delphine and daughter Coralie Seyrig as the leas. Letters Home is a raw adaptation and prime example for how theater can be turned into a film. It is filled with references that are idiosyncratic for Akerman. There is the dialogue between mother and daughter that never occurred in the cinema – and life – of Chantal Akerman, as well as the suicide, that has been omnipresent in her work since Saute ma ville.
