Aleksander Hertz – Szpieg AKA The Spy (1915)

Quote:
“The film is set in Lodz, under Prussian rule, and abounds in strong topical moments against the background of life in the occupied city.” Other sources reported that the film’s plot was “set against the background of the occupation and destruction of Kalisz by the Germans in 1914. “.

Quote:
Halina is a nurse in a hospital. One day she catches her husband cheating on her. Irena, her husband’s jealous mistress, decides to get rid of her rival and accuses her of spying. Halina is arrested and sentenced to death. Irena is tormented by remorse.

“The Spy” is the oldest surviving film by Aleksander Hertz, one of the precursors of Polish cinematography. It was produced by the Sphinx studio, considered the first Polish film studio. The cast, as in other Sphinx films, consists of the most popular artists from Warsaw’s musical and dramatic theaters.

The film has so far been unknown to a wider audience. For decades it was considered lost. Only in 2001 an incomplete copy of it with intertitles in Russian was found in the Russian film library.
