Laila Mikkelsen – Liten Ida AKA Little Ida (1981)

Synopsis
Ida and her mother, a single woman, live in Northern Norway during the Nazi occupation. Ida’s mother works as a cook at a POW camp for Russians captured during the fighting in the Arctic. But she is more involved with the Germans than that… The occupying troops were reputedly encouraged to have relations with local women in Norway (as the racial characteristics of Nordic people were favoured by Nazi ideology…) As a result, lots of Norwegian women got involved in relationships and many children were conceived.
These women were ostracized and the children were never accepted. This is the situation Ida finds herself in, although she is too young to understand it. Times are hard and emotions run high for everyone.. Things are said and done that would never normally happen. There is a shortage of just about everything and this gets on people’s nerves too. Meanwhile a gypsy family is being harassed, Ida’s older siblings get into fights with her mother and the Russian POWs are treated in an appalling fashion right under the eyes of Ida who is confused, traumatised and without friends.
The film follows Ida’s life during the last year of the occupation. Events are seen through her eyes without any attempt at explaining what’s actually going on.
This film is based on a book by Marit Paulsen, who was born in Norway but was active as a popular author and politician in Sweden.
