Atef El-Taieb – Sawak al-utubis AKA The Bus Driver (1982)

Arguably the best film of the Egyptian neorealist school of the eighties, exemplified by Daoud Abd El-Sayed, Khairy Bishara, and Mohamed Khan. depicting the devastating effects of global trade on the simple lives on the inhabitants.
Directed by Atef El-Tayeb, one of the boldest names in Egyptian cinema, who died prematurely and worked on the issues concerning the poor and the voiceless throughout his short but important career.

The story revolves around Hassan who works as a bus driver by day, and a taxi driver by night. He’s the only brother to five girls, while his father (Emad Hamdy) owns a small carpenting workshop, and because of his sister’s husband (who runs the worksop) greed and incompetence, the taxing service takes hold of the business essentially driving the old man and his family to the depths of poverty. The workshop is auctioned and Hassan tries to salvage it because his father cares deeply for it and it symbolizes his life’s work.

He tries to persuade his sisters in settling the debt and re buying the workshop to help his old man, but everyone is greedy and works for their self interest, showing the unscrupulous side of human nature.
The film shows the war vets coming back from the Israeli war, feeling isolation and losing their friends, trying to catch up with a fast moving heavily globalized society, and finding little worth saving.

There are no better existing rips or a DVD floating around, the film was prohibited from public screening, and only during the age of internet did it get some exposure from it’s vault.
