Aleksei Balabanov – U menya net druga AKA I Have No Friend (1988)

U menya net druga is one of the Aleksey Balabanov’s student films. It’s about a couple of girlfriends, still in highschool, one of whom plays all modern and adventurous, and the other one cannot move on to the sexual part of relationship with her boyfriend. One day the boyfriend, as a means of producing an impression on her, takes her to an underground rock concert, where the famous Belkin band is supposed to play, but it so happens that she leaves not with the boyfriend, but with the band.

On the one hand, it’s a typical student film, where lack of life experience and surplus of teenage intemperance shine through every hole. On the other – it’s the product of the epoch, which was perestroika, the agony of soviet communism. The story is relatively interesting, and the acting is good enough, but all in all the film is nothing special, because it is short of the most important thing – the lightness of being, a quality that would come to the director at later stages. Still, it might prove curious for Balabanov fans.
