Paul Poet – Ausländer raus! Schlingensiefs Container AKA Foreigners Out! Schlingensief’s Container (2002)

Quote:
Foreigners Out! Schlingensief’s Container documents an experiment which provoked national political hysteria.
In the summer of 2000, the German performance artist Christoph Schlingensief placed 12 genuine refugees in a container, inside a wire cage of the steps of the Vienna Opera House. He then set up a website and invited Viennese to log on and vote one out each day, Big Brother style, for deportation. 800,000 Austrians did so.
Foreigners Out! is all about performance, and Schlingensief is a performance artist with a background in political theatre. His refugee and asylum seeker volunteers for this piece of theatre were genuine, but they also elected to perform their dilemmas.
The crowds who came to the square each day to argue with Schlingensief, and his colleagues, were also performing for the cameras. Some of the hundreds of thousands who logged onto the website were, as Paul Poet suggested, artworkers getting in touch with their inner Nazi, Big Brother style. Yet the hysteria unleashed was real, and in the square the anger was directed in equal parts at Schlingensief and at the refugees themselves.
