  1. The IMDB quote is for some other film, but not for this one. There are no brothers in this movie, and no hotel at the center of conflict.

Film critic Jonathan Rosenbaum describes Masumura’s “Hanran” as an anti-capitalist film. It about Sahao Sanada, a chemist who is trying to repeat his previous success at the Sanli Chemical company – and failing. Because he has focused all of his energy and attention on his work, he has neglected his wife, is distant from his daughter, and struggles to meet the high expectations of his company’s management. As he attempts to come up with a new, innovative product, his wife drifts away, his daughter becomes involved with a younger scientist who seems to have no prospects, his colleagues are either jealous or hoping to take advantage of him – and a woman from his past reappears after a ten-year absence. The fates of his loved ones, his company, and himself all depend on his choices.
